2025 Urban Innovation Expo Opens in Samcheok
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 23rd that it will host the ‘2025 Korea Urban and Regional Innovation Industry Expo’, the largest domestic event of its kind, in Jeongna District, Samcheok City, Gangwon Province, from the 24th to the 27th over four days.
This year marks the 7th edition of the expo, which the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained is a platform for central and local governments and the private sector to share urban innovation technologies and policies with the public, and to discuss sustainable urban and regional development strategies.
The expo is co-hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Urban Regeneration Industry Promotion Association, and Yonhap News. This year, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and Samcheok City are also participating, as the event is held at Samcheok’s urban regeneration project site.
Under the slogan “Bringing Life to Regions, Breath to Cities,” the expo will provide a comprehensive overview of policies, technologies, and industries related to urban and regional innovation. It will particularly focus on sharing and discussing the latest trends and innovative cases, such as smart technologies, urban safety, and waterfront city regeneration, through international conferences, seminars, and forums.
The opening ceremony on the first day, the 24th, will begin with a video opening address by Minister Kim Yoon-duk of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, followed by a video congratulatory message from Kim Kyung-soo, Chairman of the Local Era Committee, and a welcome speech by Kim Kwang-rae, Vice Governor for Economy of Gangwon Province.
This will be followed by the announcement of the next host city and awards presented by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to outstanding public and private sector cases. The awards aim to support the dissemination of excellent policy outcomes and private innovation cases.
On the first day, the Advanced Technology Safety Inspection Association will also hold a seminar on “Urban Safety Utilizing Mobility Equipment.” The seminar will include a demonstration of a quadruped robot and discussions on smart disaster prevention systems applying advanced mobility technologies.
On the second day, the 25th, the international conference will address “Digital Transformation, Digital Technology, and Smart Urban Regeneration” as its main theme, covering topics such as “Urban Sensing and Digital Twins,” “Challenges Faced by Smart Cities in Japan’s Regional Cities,” and “Smart Regeneration of Shrinking Cities Through Living Labs.”
On the 26th, six urban regeneration hub universities will host the “Global Waterfront City Forum.” The forum will explore waterfront city regeneration cases from Sweden, Spain, and the Netherlands, and discuss policy directions for sustainable waterfront city regeneration applicable to South Korea.
Additional events include: ▲a seminar on “Urban Regeneration 4.0 for a Balanced Growth-Based Basic Society,” ▲a placemaking and town management seminar, ▲a seminar on spatial innovation plans for Gangwon Province, ▲an academic paper presentation competition on urban regeneration, and ▲a joint urban regeneration workshop.
A total of 123 institutions will participate in the exhibition, including 77 local governments and public institutions, and 46 private organizations and companies. The exhibition will be organized into the Public Innovation Zone, Urban-Regional Innovation Zone, and Industry Innovation Zone.
In his video opening address, Minister Kim is expected to state, “This expo is a place to collectively contemplate the future of cities and regions and explore new paths toward a prosperous Korea for all. I hope the wisdom and experiences shared here today will spread beyond Samcheok to the entire nation.”
