Liberia's Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), a prominent opposition party, has announced that its groundbreaking ceremony for a new national headquarters will proceed as scheduled this week. Party officials have dismissed what they characterize as "desperate distractions" orchestrated by political rivals aimed at disrupting the event.
Councillor J. Fonati Koffa, who is spearheading the construction project, addressed recent reports suggesting that a lawsuit could potentially derail the ceremony. The event is slated for October 18th and will take place along Tubman Boulevard in Monrovia's Congo Town district.
Koffa refuted claims of criminal trespassing and land disputes, dismissing them as a "failed attempt" by detractors to create confusion in advance of what the CDC is promoting as "Blue Day." This mass mobilization event is expected to attract a significant number of supporters.
"We met with the gentleman this morning. He realized he was pursuing the wrong path. The case was withdrawn, and we're back on course," Koffa stated, indicating that the legal challenge had been resolved.
Groundbreaking to Proceed as Planned
According to Koffa, the CDC has initiated preliminary mobilization efforts, and the level of enthusiasm among party members and supporters is already exceptionally high.
"We haven't even started full mobilization, but partisans, sympathizers, independents, and even ruling party members have reached out to support the project," he emphasized, highlighting the broad appeal of the initiative.
Koffa revealed that nearly 18 percent of the contributors to the headquarters project are members of the ruling Unity Party, including "a couple of deputy ministers and one minister." He suggested that their participation stemmed from goodwill rather than divided loyalty.
Clarifying the Land Dispute
Addressing rumors regarding alleged underpayment for the new property, Koffa clarified that no monetary exchange had occurred for the disputed parcel, and that it was not part of the main construction site.
"Our main property is already purchased and titled in the name of the CDC," he explained. "We only entered negotiations to acquire adjoining lots to expand the complex. But there was no $5,000 payment, and certainly no $300,000 deal."
He further elaborated that neighboring property owners had granted the CDC temporary access to adjacent spaces for parking, catering, and logistical support during the groundbreaking ceremony.
Accusations of Political Interference
Koffa accused unnamed political opponents of attempting to influence landowners and disseminate misinformation in an effort to obstruct the project.
"When the bridge story failed, they turned to land claims. These are desperate attempts, and they have failed," he asserted.
He also mentioned that the CDC has formally notified the Ministry of Justice to ensure adequate crowd and traffic management during Saturday's event.
"We're a law-abiding party," Koffa affirmed. "The Minister of Justice has agreed to meet with us to finalize arrangements for a peaceful program."
'The CDC Still Strikes Fear'
Koffa dismissed social media speculation suggesting that the land belonged to a Liberian citizen residing in the United States or that it had outstanding tax obligations.
"The taxes are fully paid. The records are there," he stated. "Property issues in Liberia can be complex, but this one is clear, the CDC owns its land."
When questioned about why the ruling establishment appeared uneasy about the opposition party's resurgence, Koffa responded:
"Every time they hear 'CDC,' they go berserk. The arrival of President Weah alone sends them into confusion. The turnout on Saturday will speak for itself."
He urged CDC supporters to maintain peace and order throughout the ceremony.
"Our citizens will come out in their numbers -- peacefully and proudly. Nothing will stop the CDC from breaking ground for its modern headquarters," he declared.
The forthcoming complex, which will serve as the CDC's first permanent headquarters since the demolition of its former Bernard's Farm compound, is being hailed by party officials as "a historic moment of renewal and unity" for the political movement founded by former President George Weah.
