Democratic Party Approval Drops to 30% Range as President Lee's Rating Declines
In a regular survey by polling firms Embrain Public, Kstat Research, Korea Research International, and Hankook Research, the Democratic Party of Korea's approval rating has fallen into the 30% range for the first time since the inauguration of President Lee Jae-myung's government. President Lee Jae-myung's approval rating also continued to decline.
According to the results of the 'National Index Survey' conducted by the four firms from the 13th to the 15th and released on the 16th, the Democratic Party's approval rating stood at 39%, a 2 percentage point decrease from the survey two weeks ago. The Democratic Party's approval rating has been on a downward trend since recording 45% in the second week of June, immediately after the inauguration of President Lee Jae-myung's government.
The People Power Party's approval rating was 23%, a 1 percentage point increase from two weeks ago. The Democratic Party's approval rating exceeded 40% among those in their 40s (49%), 50s (47%), and 60s (43%), but fell short of 40% among those in their 30s (37%) and those aged 70 and above (35%). Among those in their 10s and 20s, 18-29 years old, it was only 17%. The People Power Party's approval rating was 36% among those aged 70 and above, and between 20% and 25% in all other age groups.
The Democratic Party's approval rating was 70% in the Honam region, 41% in Incheon and Gyeonggi, and below 40% in all other regions. It recorded 38% in Seoul, 37% in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, 35% in the Chungcheong region, 21% in Gangwon and Jeju, and 18% in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. The People Power Party's approval rating was 40% in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, 33% in Gangwon and Jeju, 31% in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, 24% in the Chungcheong region, 22% in Seoul, and 20% in Incheon and Gyeonggi. In the Honam region, it was 6%.
Respondents who positively evaluated President Lee Jae-myung's state affairs management accounted for 56%, a 1 percentage point decrease from the survey two weeks ago. Those who evaluated it negatively increased by 1 percentage point to 35%. President Lee's approval rating has been declining in every survey since recording 62% in the first week of September.
President Lee's approval rating was 73% among those in their 40s, 65% among those in their 50s, 58% among those in their 30s, 54% among those in their 60s, and 49% among those aged 70 and above. Among those in their 10s and 20s, it was 33%, the only age group where negative evaluations (44%) exceeded positive ones.
President Lee's approval rating was 82% in the Honam region, followed by 61% in Incheon and Gyeonggi, 52% in Seoul, 51% in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, 50% in the Chungcheong region, 45% in Gangwon and Jeju, and 39% in Daegu and Gyeongbuk.
Regarding President Lee's appearance on JTBC's culinary variety program 'Please Take Care of My Refrigerator' during the Chuseok holiday, 48% of respondents answered that they viewed it positively. Thirty-five percent viewed it negatively. However, when asked whether the president's appearance helped promote K-food and Korean culture, 47% responded 'it was helpful,' while 46% said 'it was not helpful,' resulting in similar response rates.
The government's response to the fire at the National Information Resources Service that occurred on the 26th of last month was positively evaluated by 49% of respondents. Forty-two percent evaluated it negatively. Additionally, 64% said that resolving and recovering from the accident should take priority and political disputes should be refrained from, while 28% stated that as a man-made disaster due to poor management, the president should apologize and those responsible should be held accountable.
Regarding the investigation by the insurrection special counsel team, 47% evaluated it as being done well, while 43% evaluated it as being done poorly, within the margin of error. Among progressives, 72% positively evaluated it, while 64% of conservatives negatively evaluated it. Among moderates, positive evaluators (47%) and negative evaluators (46%) were nearly equal.
However, when asked whether the insurrection special counsel team is conducting the investigation independently without external influence, 66% responded that 'it is influenced by political circles.' Only 23% of respondents believed that it is not influenced by political circles.

Respondents who positively evaluated the president cited reasons such as economic recovery (24.8%), eradication of insurrection forces (9.5%), diplomacy and security (9.5%), and welfare and labor (7.8%). Those who negatively evaluated him stated that the president is not performing well in areas including eradication of insurrection forces (20.5%), diplomacy and security (17.0%), national unity (12.7%), and economic recovery (10.3%).
Regarding the local elections in June next year, 46.8% of respondents believed the ruling party would win, while 30.5% believed the opposition party would win.
Regarding the job performance of Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae, 36.6% evaluated it positively, while 52.2% evaluated it negatively. For People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok's job performance, 33.7% gave a positive evaluation, and 52.3% gave a negative evaluation.
