A prominent Nigerian politician, Senator Adolphus Wabara, a former Senate President, has publicly endorsed the campaign advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Wabara's support was conveyed in a personal message addressed to activist Omoyele Sowore, a human rights advocate and the 2023 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC). Sowore has been spearheading a campaign demanding Kanu's release.

The letter, which Sowore shared publicly, revealed Wabara's full support for the planned demonstrations. Wabara explained that he was currently abroad for medical treatment and therefore unable to participate physically in the planned march.

The former Senate President, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also lauded Sowore and other activists organizing the march, scheduled for October 20th, for their courage in standing up against injustice.

The letter stated: "I have been informed about the planned protest on the 20th of October, calling for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. I wish to commend your efforts and those of others who continue to speak up for justice and fairness in our country."

He added, "Unfortunately, I am out of the country and will not be able to join you physically on that day. However, please know that I am with you in spirit and in full support of every peaceful effort aimed at securing justice and national reconciliation. I wish you and all participants a peaceful and successful outing."

Sowore has been actively urging key figures from the South-East region of Nigeria, including governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and religious leaders, to join the demonstration advocating for Kanu’s release.

He stated that he had contacted several prominent Igbo leaders, including:

• Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Governor of Anambra State
• Dr. Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State
• Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe
• Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate

Sowore elaborated on his outreach efforts, saying, "I have tried reaching out personally to Dr. @alexottiofr, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo @CCSoludo, and Mr @PeterObi (through his team) today. Alex Otti and Soludo neither took my calls nor responded to my messages. They promised to tell Mr. @PeterObi about our plans, although he is currently travelling."

He also mentioned contacting other influential figures:

• Alhaji @Atiku, through his team
• Senator @SenatorAbaribe, who reportedly promised to return his call
• Obinna Agwuocha, a member of the House of Representatives, who was described as receptive and encouraging.

Furthermore, Sowore discussed communication with members of the Abia State House of Assembly:

• He stated that they informed him of plans to travel to London the following week and then return to Abuja to pursue further action.
• Their initial plan involved visiting the Attorney General of the Federation to lodge a complaint, rather than participating in a "placard" protest.
• Sowore emphasized the importance of agreeing on a unified date for action, regardless of the specific approach taken.

Sowore stressed the urgency of the situation, stating, "This is not the time for hesitation. If we genuinely believe that @MaziNnamdiKanu deserves freedom, then every leader of conscience must act, now, not later."

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021, following his controversial extradition from Kenya.

Despite numerous court rulings ordering his release, including a 2022 Court of Appeal judgment that discharged and acquitted him of all charges, citing the illegality of his extradition under international law, the Federal Government has yet to comply with these orders.

Kanu faces charges related to terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement before the Federal High Court in Abuja. He has consistently denied all charges against him. The continued detention of Kanu remains a contentious issue in Nigeria, with many calling for his release and raising concerns about due process and the rule of law.
