Kericho: Litein Boys’ High School has been shut down indefinitely after students staged a violent protest that saw parts of the institution reduced to ashes on Sunday night.

The chaos reportedly erupted after the administration declined a request by students to watch the much-hyped English Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester City.

Why did Litein Boys go on strike?

Learners had expected to view the game as part of their weekend entertainment schedule, a routine that is common in many boys’ schools.

When the administration stood its ground and refused, tempers flared. What began as murmurs of discontent soon spiraled into a full-blown riot, with students destroying property to vent their anger.

Videos and images seen by Best for you.co.ke captured the extent of the destruction. Dormitories and classrooms were set ablaze, sending plumes of smoke into the night sky.

Charred walls and scattered debris remained where once stood learning facilities worth millions of shillings.

Sources indicated that the students strategically plunged the compound into darkness by switching off all lights, making it difficult for security personnel and police officers to contain the situation.

Overpowered and outnumbered, law enforcement struggled to control the rampage.

This is not the first time Litein Boys has been in the spotlight for similar incidents.

Only in July this year, another rampage broke out when students protested over poorly prepared rice during dinner.

The latest incident comes at a sensitive time, with national examinations only weeks away.

What did Cheruiyot say about Litein Boys strike?

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot expressed his disappointment at the turn of events, describing the fire and destruction as senseless and untimely.

In his statement, Cheruiyot said Litein Boys had long been regarded as a center of academic excellence but now risks losing its reputation.

“I’m aghast at the news that fire razed down part of the school after students went on a rampage over a number of sticky issues,” he said. “It is abhorrent that destruction of such important facilities has occurred days to the start of the national examinations. This setback could potentially disorient and derail the candidates.”

The Senator urged the school’s board, the principal, and law enforcement agencies to move swiftly to identify the root cause and prevent further disruptions.

“The future of our young people must be protected, and discipline as the centerpiece for success enforced,” he stressed.
