French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte are taking an unusual step in a legal battle against American influencer Candace Owens.
Owens finds herself in the legal crosshairs after she recently claimed that Mrs Macron was born male.
How will Macron prove his wife is female?
The couple is preparing to present both photographic and scientific evidence in a U.S. court to counter the claims in a defamation lawsuit.
Their legal team insists the evidence will definitively prove Brigitte Macron’s gender.
Tom Clare, the Macrons’ lawyer, told the BBC that the allegations have been deeply upsetting for Mrs Macron and are a distraction for the French president.
"I do not want to suggest that it somehow has thrown him off his game. But just like anybody juggling a career and family life, when your family is under attack, it takes a toll. He Is not immune from that just because he is president," Clare said.
The lawyer added that expert testimony, which will be scientific in nature, is set to be presented.
While he did not provide details, Clare stressed that the couple is ready to prove both generically and specifically that Owens’ allegations are false.
"It is incredibly upsetting to think that you have to go and subject yourself to put this type of proof forward. It is a process that she will have to undergo very publicly. But she is willing to do it. She is firmly resolved to set the record straight," he explained.
When asked if the evidence would include pictures of Brigitte pregnant and raising her children, Clare confirmed that such documentation exists and will be presented in court according to legal standards.
When did the claims surface?
This is not the first time claims about Brigitte Macron’s gender have surfaced.
In 2021, similar allegations appeared in a defamation case against two bloggers.
Although the Macrons initially won, the ruling was overturned on appeal in 2025 on freedom of expression grounds, not because the claims were deemed true.
Owens’ legal team has already filed a motion to dismiss the current lawsuit, but she reportedly continues to stand by her statements.
The BBC added that in August, Emmanuel Macron told French magazine Paris Match the reason behind their decision to take legal action.
"This is about defending my honour. These claims are absurd. The person spreading them knew the information was false and aimed to cause harm, driven by an ideology and linked to far-right figures," Macron said.
It is also worth mentioning that Brigitte is almost 25 years older than him, which has always been a subject of debate.
