The Robert Lehman Collection, housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is coming to Korea for the first time. The special exhibition *From Impressionism to Early Modernism: The People Who Collected Light*, opening at the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul, on the 14th of next month, is anticipated as a blockbuster event. The special exhibition is co-hosted by Chosun Ilbo, the National Museum of Korea, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This exhibition introduces French modern and contemporary masterpieces from the Robert Lehman Collection to Korea for the first time. Robert Lehman (1891–1969), a member of the Lehman Brothers investment banking family and a top-tier art collector, grew up surrounded by high-quality artworks due to the influence of his father, Philip Lehman, a prominent collector. Based on his exceptional discernment, he collected works independently without relying on expert advice, guided solely by his intuition.
Over his lifetime, Lehman built an extensive collection spanning from the Italian Renaissance to the early 20th century, donating over 2,600 pieces to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His belief that “great artworks should not be for individual pleasure but shared with many people” underpinned this act. The Lehman Wing, opened in 1975, played a significant role in establishing the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a global hub for 19th-century French art.
Lehman’s French modern and contemporary masterpieces, collected intensively from the 1940s, mark a pivotal shift in his career as a collector. The National Museum of Korea stated, “This exhibition highlights how Impressionism transformed art history and opened the door to Modernism, showcasing French masterpieces from the late 19th to early 20th centuries.” Featured works include Auguste Renoir’s *Two Girls at the Piano* (1892) and *Girl with a Pink and Black Hat* (circa 1891), Paul Gauguin’s *Tahitian Women Bathing* (1892), Vincent van Gogh’s *Orchard in Blossom* (1888), and Henri Matisse’s *Nude on a Chair* (1920), among 81 paintings and drawings. Yang Sung-hyuk, head of the exhibition department, introduced the show as “a fresh exploration of Impressionism, a movement often treated as a single thread in Western art history, through the lens of one collector’s vision.”
How did Robert Lehman view and collect Impressionism? Yang Seung-mi, a curator of the exhibition, explained, “Since Lehman rarely wrote about his collection or kept diaries, we can understand his perspective through the works he left behind.” She added, “The Lehman Collection reflects the family’s philosophy of compressing major art historical movements. The Impressionist to early Modernist works he collected are not merely beautiful; they are a concentrated record of the late 19th-century art transition, allowing visitors to experience the diverse facets of Impressionism and Lehman’s original vision.”
The exhibition is organized around five themes—body, portrait, nature, urbanization, and water—vividly illustrating the evolution of nudes, portraits, and landscapes in art history. Works by female artists such as Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, alongside male artists’ depictions of women, offer glimpses into the changing social status and roles of women in the late 19th century. Visitors will also encounter landscapes by Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, which capture the light and atmosphere of nature. Yang Seung-mi, the curator, remarked, “The Lehman Collection in Korea is a record of the new perspectives and transitions in art from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, as well as a legacy of Lehman’s passion and spirit of donation.” She continued, “We hope his deep affection for art and the spirit of sharing through donation will resonate with everyone.”
From the 16th to the 31st, Ticketlink (www.ticketlink.co.kr) will host an early-bird special event. Early-bird tickets are priced at 13,300 Korean won, a 30% discount from the regular adult price of 19,000 Korean won.
