Social media apps 'should get cigarette-style health warnings' to protect children, Lib Dems to warn
‘Addictive’ content on social media should come with ‘cigarette-style’ health warnings to protect children, the Liberal Democrats will warn today.
The party is also proposing what it calls a ‘doomscrolling cap’ to limit the time that children can watch TikTok-style videos to two hours a day.
Lib Dem science and tech spokesman Victoria Collins is due to set out plans to tackle social-media algorithms that can be ‘as addictive as a drug’.
Some 80 per cent of parents report that excessive phone usage affects their children’s behaviour, leaving them skipping meals and not sleeping properly, research for the party has found.
A quarter of parents with school-aged children said their offspring had difficulty sleeping after using their phones too much, 18 per cent said it had affected their appetite and 13 per cent said it had given their children eye strain or headaches.
The survey by the polling firm Savanta found that one in five parents had argued with a family member about excessive phone use, while 19 per cent said their children had lost interest in hobbies or sports clubs because they preferred to spend time glued to social media.
Young people have told the party they want more to be done to make it harder for children to access addictive snippets of online content. One sixth former said social media was ‘as addictive as a drug, and I feel the negative effects of my addiction to it every day’.
In a speech at the Lib Dem conference in Bournemouth today, Ms Collins will set out the party’s policy to tackle children’s social media use and the ‘mental health epidemic’ it is causing. She is expected to say: ‘Just like cigarettes or alcohol, these addictive products carry well-documented risks, especially for young people.

‘The evidence is clear that excessive use of these apps exposes children to mental-health issues, to anxiety, sleep disruption and to real harm to attention spans.
‘Don’t they deserve to know that? When we pick up a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of wine, we expect to be told about the harm those products will pose to our health. So why is social media – the key driver of a crisis in young people’s mental health – any different?’
Similar proposals for cigarette-style warnings on social media apps were explored by former US President Joe Biden after they were suggested by his Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy.
The proposed health alerts for the UK would warn children that extended exposure to social media content increases the risk of sleep disorders and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.
The Liberal Democrats also want to bring in a ‘doomscrolling cap’ that would end the infinite scroll feature on social media platforms, limiting the amount of time children can watch videos.
Ms Collins is expected to say: ‘The Government must finally deliver and introduce a doomscroll ban that caps the amount of time children can spend on these addictive apps.’
