A man died on Monday after falling into a seemingly bottomless sinkhole called Thor's Well on the central Oregon Coast.
Emergency crews responded to a call about a man who had fallen into the well and appeared to be drowning around 3:40pm.
But by the time they arrived, he was already dead and floating facedown in the water, periodically disappearing before becoming visible again as ocean water filled and emptied the 20-foot deep hole with the ebb and flow of the waves.
'When you show up to that it’s really just "Oh man, this sucks",' rescue diver Tyler Gantt told the Lincoln Chronicle. He would be the one to eventually pull the body from the water.
'But body recovery is important, important for families to have closure and important for the fire department to not have to put themselves in harm’s way and potentially add more bodies to the disaster.'
This was the third drowning at Thor's Well since 2017.
First responders initially received conflicting reports from bystanders about the man's whereabouts but quickly determined he was still in the water, according to the Yachats Rural Fire Protection District.
'The events leading up to the subject falling into the water are unclear, but one bystander reported believing that the subject had been getting too close to the edge of the well,' said officials with the Yachats Rural Fire Protection District.
Because of the dangerous wave conditions and nature of the well, emergency personnel could not immediately perform rescue attempts.
The agencies that first arrived at the scene included the Yachats Rural Fire Protection District, Central Oregon Coast Fire and Rescue, Seal Rock Fire and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
They requested further assistance from the United States Coast Guard, Oregon State Police, and the Lincoln County Technical Rescue Team.
They had to stand by until a US Coast Guard helicopter arrived around 4:10pm, approximately 30 minutes after the initial emergency call response.
The rescue swimmer, 31-year-old Tyler Gantt, was able to recover the body of the drowned man on his third attempt as he dangled from a long cable hanging from the dispatched Coast Guard helicopter.
He said it was one of the most dangerous assignments he has faced in his 10 years of rescue diving experience.
The hole was not as wide as he was expecting and there was a risk that the cable he was hanging from would snap as it alternated between slack and tension with Gantt bobbing up and down due to the constantly changing water level.
It took the rescue swimmer a total of 20 minutes to retrieve the drowned man's body as he struggled to get a good grip.
After the ordeal, Gannt was frustrated after reading in the Lincoln Chronicle that people were walking right back down to the edge of Thor's Well and trying to look inside just an hour after he had retrieved the dead body and left.
He said that as one of the only people to have been inside Thor's Well and survived, there is nothing to see. It's nothing but a 'hole in a rock,' he told the Lincoln Chronicle.
'It’s not worth risking your life to peer over the edge and take a look inside. There’s nothing in it. The only cool thing about it to see is the waves coming out of the spout from a safe distance,' he went on to say.
Thor's Well sits at the edge of the Oregon coast near Cape Perpetua. It has also been called the drainpipe of the Pacific.
Researchers believe it began as a sea cave dug out by waves before the roof eventually collapsed and created holes in the bottom and top which give it the appearance of draining ocean water.
