Akpabio's Controversial Remarks on Trump and Nigerian Grievances

Nigeria's Senate President Akpabio did not state that President Trump should concentrate on U.S. matters or that 'Nigerians are not complaining about killings'

IN SHORT:As per multiple Facebook posts, Nigeria's Senate President Godswill Akpabio reportedly advised US President Donald Trump to concentrate on the United States rather than Nigeria. However, the statement attributed to Akpabio is false.

US President Donald Trump islabelledNigeria designated as a "country of particular concern," according to reports of supposed attacks on Christian groups.

A "nation of special concern" is adesignationof a country committing serious breaches of religious liberty under the US'sInternational Religious Freedom Act.

While there have been reports of attacks on Christians and members of other religious groupsIn Nigeria, Trump has not offered any evidence to support his assertions.

In reply, the Nigerian government hasmaintainedthat the nation's security issues impact both Christians and Muslims, highlighting that the constitution ensures religious freedom for every citizen.

In this context, severalPosts on Facebook allege that the Senate presidentGodswill Akpabiohas criticized Trump, stating that he ought to concentrate on matters within the United States, as Nigerians are not expressing concerns about conditions in their own nation.

Akpabio holds the third-highest political officeafter the president and the vice president.

The quoteattributed to Akpabio states: "Breaking News!! The killings are happening in Nigeria, not in the USA. Trump should concentrate on the US. Nigerians are not complaining about the killings; we are completely content with the situation in Nigeria."

The same claim appears here, here and here. (Note: See more examples at the end of this report.)

But did Akpabio actually make this statement? We verified.

Fake news

Considering that the Nigerian government has already released anofficial statementin reply to Trump's statements, it would have been uncommon for Akpabio to offer his own comments on the matter.

However, Africa Check looked for the claimed quote on Akpabio's official pagesocial media platforms, where he frequently posts about his activities, and found nothing.

On November 3, 2025, Jackson Udom, Akpabio's assistant, dismissed the claim on Facebook.

Udom wrote:

We have become aware of a harmful and entirely fake post released by a website named Rant HQ, which wrongly credits a reckless and fictional remark to the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON. The post, which states, "The killing is happening in Nigeria, not in the USA, Trump should concentrate on the US. Nigerians are not complaining about the killings, we are completely content with the state of Nigeria," is a complete lie, a result of malicious intent, and an effort to create confusion between Senator Godswill Akpabio and U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as between Nigeria and its global allies. To make it clear, the Senate President has never made such a statement—whether publicly, privately, in writing, or during a conversation. We call on the people behind this false information to provide any proof that contradicts this claim.

The assertion that Akpabio suggested Trump should focus on the United States rather than Nigeria is false.

The false statement also surfaced here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.
