Jim Avila, a former ABC News reporter, passed away at the age of 69, according to his devastated coworkers.
He died following a "prolonged illness," anchor Diane Macedo stated on Thursday morning. She did not reveal the specific condition in her statement.
He received a kidney transplant in 2020. The organ was provided by his brother.
Avila was a Los Angeles- senior national correspondent for the network and reporter on 20/20.
His career spanning four decades involved reporting on politics, justice, legal matters, and consumer-related investigations.
He covered the White House during President Barack Obamahis second term and received an award for reporting the news that the United States andCuba had opened diplomatic relations.
The president of ABC News, Almin Karamehmedovic, stated: 'We offer our deepest sympathies to his family, comprising his three children, Jamie, Jenny, and Evan, and we appreciate his numerous contributions and steadfast dedication to uncovering the truth.'
Supporters and ex-collaborators have turned to online platforms to honor the late reporter.
"A legendary figure in broadcast journalism has passed," tweeted KTLA anchor Frank Buckley.
He referred to Avila as "one of my close friends with whom I had countless nights out" and "a person who deeply cared about journalism, his friends, and his family."
"I'll be sorry to see him go," Buckley added.
ABC Supervising Producer and Reporter John Parkinson explained how Avila "demanded the best from his colleagues but always kept it fun."
"Our tasks led us to the G20 summit in Antalya, Turkey, to Martha's Vineyard, to Waikiki, and numerous locations in between. Rest in peace, my friend," he wrote.
Karamehmedovic, in an internal email addressed to employees referenced byABC News, said: "Jim was an accomplished reporter and a kind coworker."
A supporter of Avila referred to him as a 'mainstay in news reporting' and mentioned his passing as a 'tragic loss' for all.
His contributions over the years were substantial," the X user stated, continuing, "Honestly, this one resonates a bit more due to his appearance on '20/20' — he had such a composed, reliable approach to reporting difficult stories.
A supporter commented: 'I'm deeply saddened by the passing of former ABC News reporter Jim Avila. He was an exceptional journalist. We need more individuals like him today.'
Avila began his professional journey in 1973 at KCBS radio in San Francisco. He held positions at various local television stations such as KNBC in Los Angeles, WBBM in Chicago, and KPIX in San Francisco.
He also worked as a national reporter for NBC Nightly News prior to becoming part of the ABC News staff.
Avila departed from the network in 2021, after undergoing a transplant. He joined ABC's San Diego station KGTV as a senior investigative reporter in December 2023.
When questioned about his return to work, Avila explained to theTimes of San Diego that 'retirement was boring.'
"I've visited every state in the nation and all continents except Antarctica. I have reported on the White House, conflicts, and mass shootings. I still aim to create a difference in journalism, and San Diego is an ideal location for that," he mentioned during the January 2024 interview.
During his professional life, Avila reported on 'every significant trial from Jerry Sandusky and Penn State to Michael Jackson, OJ Simpson, and many more,' stated ABC.
Even when he began experiencing health issues, Avila remained involved in the field of journalism by engaging in editorial writing and covering local news.
He conveyed his "experience and profound interest in sharing the stories that were most significant to his community and audience," according to Karamehmedovic's email.
Avila received many honors, such as two National Emmy Awards and five Edward R. Murrow Awards.
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists honored him as reporter of the year in 1999. The group also recognized him as a 2019 Hall of Fame inductee.
His reporting on the Peru drug conflicts and the passing of Chicago Mayor Harold Washington garnered him honors from the Headline Club of Chicago.
Furthermore, the club awarded him the title of Top Reporter in 1989.
