Libreville (Gabon), Nov 14, GNA – The Federation of African News Agencies (FAAPA) will assist its members in boosting their Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to ensure and enhance their activities, according to President of the organization, Mr Fouad Arif.

Speaking to members at the 10th Executive Council Meeting held in Libreville, Mr. Arif, the Director-General of the Maghreb Arab Press (MAP), mentioned that FAAPA would collaborate by sharing and providing training to business development officers from member agencies on the effective IGF model utilized by Morocco's flourishing news agency.

This comes after worries expressed by certain members regarding insufficient and inconsistent government grants, which were causing challenges in financing their activities.

Participants noted that certain governments had not yet recognized the importance of national news agencies for sustainable development, social unity, and the strengthening of democracy, especially in an age of information chaos fueled by uncontrolled social media.

Mr. Arif highlighted the importance of news agencies in delivering reliable and vital information for national development and encouraged members to submit their suggestions for evaluation.

He mentioned that the Moroccan Government recognized the significance of news agencies and, therefore, maintained its support for FAAPA in offering training and technical help to its members.

He pledged support to enhance FAAPA's professional development networks focusing on Women, Fact-Checking, Health Communication, and related topics.

FAAPA would also assist journalists from member countries in covering the upcoming AFCON.

At the inauguration event, Mr. Paul-Marie Gondjout, Gabon's Minister of Communication and Media, emphasized the importance of investing in local news agencies.

He emphasized that backing news organizations is essential for protecting democracy and civic engagement, noting that their role has become "more vital than ever" in the worldwide battle against false information.

"News organizations act as the ethical guide for society, the protectors of community unity and the spreaders of factual information," he stated.

He stressed that they need to be provided with the required resources to keep generating high-quality information.

The gathering focuses on the topic: "News Agencies dealing with the Increase in Press Violations and the Duty of Reporters."

Mr. Gondjout discussed the current issues facing the media industry caused by the rise of false information and the quick dissemination of unconfirmed material.

He described the honorable purpose of the media as a duty of "illuminating without obscuring, critiquing without dismantling, and informing to foster growth."

Recognizing the media's role as a fundamental part of the Fifth Republic, he cited the President of the Republic, who is also the Head of State and Head of Government: "Supporting the press in Gabon means upholding the truth; and upholding the truth means refusing lies, no matter how beneficial they might seem."

Praising FAAPA for its assistance to news agencies, Mr. Gondjout stated that the Federation keeps emphasizing the importance of stopping the spread of "caricatured news" and protecting the continent's interests and reputation in a reliable and professional way.

Speaking during a panel discussion on the topic, Madam Oumou Barry, who previously served as Director-General of the Ivorian News Agency (AIP), emphasized that the news agency continued to be the foundation of trustworthy and strong information and played a central role in the media production system.

The conversation, jointly facilitated by a seasoned attorney and a judge, examined the moral and legal issues surrounding journalism in the modern era, considering the rising instances of defamation and damage to reputation on online platforms.

Madam Barry pointed out that a news organization lacking trustworthiness was similar to a loudspeaker, and she urged journalists to strive for quality and maintain the most rigorous professional principles.

Following the Council members' review of the 2025 submissions for the FAAPA Grand Prix, FAAPA's Secretary-General, Mr. Mohammed Anis, revealed the victors in the three awarded categories.

Usman Aliyu from the News Agency of Nigeria secured the Feature Article award for his article titled "Swipe to Survive," which examines how digital payments are tackling youth joblessness in Nigeria.

Yacouba Soro from the Ivorian News Agency (AIP) secured the Video Category award for his report titled "Plastic Waste: from pollutant to development lever," which showcases pioneers addressing the issue of plastic waste.

The top Photo Story award was given to Guylain Kipoke Omba from the Congo Kinshasa News Agency (ACP) for a photograph depicting a mother's intense struggle to rescue her child from drowning in floodwaters following a 24-hour heavy rain.

The recipients will be awarded $1,000 each in January 2026 at FAAPA's upcoming General Assembly meeting held in Marrakech, Morocco.

The four-day gathering concludes on Friday, November 14.
