Ganduje and Yusuf Unite, Demand Solidarity

A unique instance of reconciliation emerged in the political scene of Kano State on Tuesday, when current Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf met with his predecessor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, for the first time since the intense 2023 elections.
A short but friendly meeting that occurred at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport has been seen by party members as an indication that long-standing conflicts might be shifting toward discussion and collaboration.
In conversation with our correspondent, Alhassan Garba Yaryasa, a high-ranking member of the APC and former coordinator of Tinubu's campaign in Kano South, mentioned that he had been hoping for such a meeting for a long time.
"I have been hoping for this moment for a long time," Yaryasa stated.
The political landscape of Kano has occasionally been marked by conflict and competition, yet witnessing both leaders interact politely today is comforting. It shows that political rivalries should not lead to lasting hostility.
He mentioned that the meeting went beyond a simple formal visit. "This represents the level of political sophistication we require in Kano," Yaryasa added.
It conveys a powerful message to all party members, lawmakers, and interested parties that we are capable of putting aside disagreements for the benefit of our citizens.
I wasn't surprised by this meeting since I have always supported communication and reconciliation.
"Politics, in the end, revolves around serving the people, rather than personal conflicts or hatred. This serves as an example that other political figures should follow," he stated.
Yaryasa, who also emphasized the importance of the gathering, stated: “Kano faces urgent development problems—security, infrastructure, education, health—and political competition should not hinder efforts to tackle these matters.”
He believes that both Governor Yusuf and former Governor Ganduje possess influence and experience that, if used effectively, could benefit the state.
He characterized the gathering as an indication that cooperation can occur, even between past adversaries.
In the same way, Mustapha Muhammad Bello, a Senior Special Reporter to the Governor within the Deputy Governor’s Office, characterized the meeting as an indication of political wisdom and maturity.
"This marks a significant time in Kano's political landscape," Bello stated.
It is significant not due to the duration of the meeting, but because of its symbolic meaning. When leaders come together in a friendly manner, it establishes a precedent for collaboration, discussion, and a mutual dedication to the well-being of the citizens.
Bello emphasized that the warmth shown was a valuable lesson for upcoming politicians. "Our political atmosphere frequently amplifies disagreements, but this gathering demonstrates that respect and shared understanding can still be achieved."
Governor Yusuf and former Governor Ganduje might have had a tough competition in 2023, but now they have shown that competition doesn't have to turn into conflict. This is a good sign that could change the way political disagreements are managed in Kano.
He additionally mentioned that these interactions might encourage tangible collaboration.
When leaders show a readiness to engage in dialogue, it motivates lawmakers, party leaders, and government representatives to collaborate on initiatives aimed at development.
It enhances governance, openness, and responsibility. This gathering goes beyond a simple agreement—it marks the beginning of a fresh political atmosphere within the state.
Arewa PUNCH states that the meeting between the two individuals took place at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, where Ganduje, who is currently the Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Board, was examining the airport's facilities.
Arewa PUNCH reported that the Kano governor was heading to Abuja. Unluckily, he met his predecessor, resulting in a friendly encounter.
Ganduje, who served two terms as governor, was welcomed by leading APC officials, whereas Governor Yusuf, representing the New Nigeria People’s Party, was joined by high-ranking government officials. The meeting brought about smiles, friendly handshakes, and a conversation filled with polite greetings that continued for several minutes.
Our reporter notes that Ganduje did not personally transfer authority following the 2023 elections, instead assigning the then Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, to carry out the formal transition.
Previously, Governor Yusuf had beaten Ganduje's chosen candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna from the APC, to win the fiercely disputed election.
Political analysts think the meeting might ease hostilities among followers of the two parties and promote cooperative administration in Kano.
"One analyst remarked, 'It might be short,' but the symbolism is strong—highlighting that even former adversaries can come together, talk, and display political maturity for the country's development," Dr. Ahmed Shehu.
