Germany and Namibia Boost Inclusive Sports Collaboration
The Special Olympics Namibia, collaborating with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), officially announced the upcoming initiation of a six-week national capacity-building initiative designed to enhance and promote inclusive sports across Namibia.
This initiative is a part of the heritage from the 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which took place in Berlin, Germany. During this event, the German Federal Foreign Office and the German sports community pledged to promote international development through inclusive sports. The Namibia project is a clear extension of Germany's commitment to expanding the worldwide Special Olympics movement.
The initiative is planned to take place between 1 November and 13 December 2025, receiving significant backing from the German Federal Foreign Office, along with financial contributions from Special Olympics International in collaboration with Lions International. The program is carried out in conjunction with Special Olympics Namibia. The local entities supporting the project include the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC), the Namibian School Sports Union (NSSU), and Local Federations (Basketball & Volleyball), as well as the Basketball Artist School (BAS), which already maintains a solid partnership with Germany.
Since gaining independence in 1990, Germany has been one of Namibia's most steadfast allies across various fields, with a particular emphasis on the younger generation and direct interactions between the two nations. The 2023 World Games Legacy Program serves as a notable example highlighting this unique partnership.

The initiative will enable Special Olympics Namibia to grow its regional and sport-focused connections, assisting schools, sports associations, non-governmental organizations, and disability groups in establishing and maintaining inclusive athletic settings.
In the coming weeks, three regional four-day coaching sessions will take place in Omaruru (13-16 November), Keetmanshoop (20-23 November), and Windhoek (25-28 November).
At least 100 coaches will be trained in the Special Olympics Unified Sports® approach, integrating theoretical knowledge with hands-on modules in basketball and volleyball. These trained coaches will play a crucial role in promoting inclusive sports within their areas, enhancing the national movement and providing more opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
The event will end with a two-day Unified Sports® practical competition on November 29-30, with more than 120 athletes and partners anticipated to take part. Approximately 80 of the recently trained coaches will be actively involved in hosting, refereeing, grouping, and managing teams—demonstrating the clear effect of the training.
The press conference held yesterday included participants from DOSB, Special Olympics Namibia, Special Olympics Germany, NNOC, NSSU, BAS, national sports associations, the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, and the Namibian Sports Commission.
Levien Smit, the national director of Special Olympics Namibia, stated:
As part of the Berlin 2023 legacy initiative, this program illustrates how global platforms can create lasting national effects. Inclusive sports is a fundamental right, not a privilege, that helps athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities leave their homes and develop skills on the field. Through our collaboration with Germany, DOSB, and local partners, we are establishing sustainable opportunities for athletes throughout the country.
Tobias Antoni, manager of international relations at DOSB, stated:
Germany is honored to maintain the momentum from the Berlin Games by assisting Namibia in building more inclusive sports systems. This initiative demonstrates our joint dedication to fairness, collaboration, and sustainable growth.
