  • Residents of two villages in Ikolomani sub-county are experiencing fear following news of their intended displacement.
  • The move comes after the identification of a massive gold reserve valued at billions of shillings, which a British company is said to intend to mine.
  • Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale, however, has spoken out to express his position on the mentioned relocation plan.

Senator Boni Khalwale from Kakamega has spoken out regarding claims that the government intends to move residents from two villages in Ikolomani sub-county after the identification of gold reserves valued at billions of shillings.

Allegations of an impending move come after reports that a UK-based company, Shanta Gold Limited, showed interest in mining the gold reserve worth more than KSh 683 billion.

Does Khalwale back the proposed removal of Ikolomani residents?

Speaking exclusively to okay1.co.keOn Thursday, November 13, Khalwale stated that he would not permit any of the residents to be moved from their present homes.

The reported relocation aims to affect the Isulu and Bushiangala regions.

He maintained that the land, which is abundant in minerals, should belong to the locals and the community, ensuring they keep reaping its benefits.

The senator further stated that the relocation is a component of the high-ranking government officials' scheme to unlawfully profit from the gold reserves.

"I refuse to accept the relocation of my community because an official in the government seeks personal gain. These are our minerals, and I call on the government to leave them for the people," Khalwale said to okay1.co.ke.

He further mentioned that for many years, gold mining has served as a means of support for numerous residents in the Ikolomani constituency.

Furthermore, he disclosed that multiple public engagement meetings were conducted in the region concerning gold mining, with residents consistently opposing any efforts to permit private companies to function in the area.

What are the requirements for moving residents of Ikolomani?

Nevertheless, Khalwale, who also serves as the Senate Majority Whip, mentioned that if the move becomes required, all legal procedures must be strictly adhered to.

He pledged to residents in the impacted regions that while he continues as their leader and is alive, no one will be removed from their homes without adhering to the correct procedures.

"If the investor wishes to obtain our valuable minerals, he needs to come and speak with us directly, rather than relying on government officials who are unaware of the community's needs," the senator stated.

He cautioned that residents could be compelled to take legal action and obtain rulings to prevent any unjust evictions.

Khalwale also blamed certain Kakamega politicians for encouraging residents to sell their family-owned lands.

"Discontent is widespread in my village. Certain leaders are wandering around encouraging people to leave their ancestral lands, which is unacceptable," Khalwale stated.

What was the reason for the protests by Ikolomani residents?

Previously, okay1.co.kereported that a group of residents in Ikolomani organized a demonstration due to claims that the government intends to move them.

Residents stated that a group of surveyors had already been sent to the region and had been spotted on their traditional territory.

They further alleged that officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) talked about their transfer without seeking their approval.
