A distribution box from Safe City cameras, which was not functioning, was discovered on Thursday in Karachi's affluent Clifton area, following reports of its theft, according to the police. 'This was a non-powered/non-working pole location near Sea Rock Apartments at Seaview, where the theft of a distribution box was reported to local authorities on November 6,' said South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza to the media.
Later, the DIG confirmed, "The distribution box has been retrieved from a nearby area." He stated that the police were "working on a plan in collaboration with the Sindh Safe City Authority to avoid such incidents in the future." Referring to a staff member from a nearby hotel earlier today, the South police chief mentioned, "A vehicle equipped with a crane was seen working on the pole several hours before the theft was reported." Since then, some switches and the battery have gone missing, the DIG added. The officer mentioned that the distribution box was placed at an "extremely high position," noting that it would not have been possible for a single person to steal it. He pointed out that the cameras were also not working. DIG Raza noted that the area was a "total blackout zone" with no street lights or CCTV cameras installed by private restaurants.
"Just one camera is installed at Sea Rock Apartments, providing limited visibility of the parking area," he stated, mentioning that the police had sent letters to the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) requesting the installation of street lights in the area, but without success. According to DIG Raza, there was no alarm system in place at the 'non-functional' pole, making it challenging to determine when the distribution box was taken. Further inquiry into the issue is ongoing, he added.
The initial stage of the Karachi Safe City Initiative, designed to improve public safety and security, commenced on May 31, 2024. During this phase, 891 surveillance cameras were installed throughout Karachi.
Last month, Sindh's Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah gave the go-ahead for the project to be extended to additional high-risk commercial and residential zones in Karachi, such as the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and the areas of South, East, and Malir.
E-challan cameras in Karachi become inactive after thieves steal the Safe City unit
A surprising security violation occurred when the Safe City Project's distribution box, located in Karachi's Clifton area for monitoring and e-challan cameras, was taken.
The Director General of the Safe City Project in Karachi, Asif Ijaz Sheikh, confirmed the theft, stating that after the incident, the cameras connected to the system had to be removed. The DG mentioned that the distribution box (DB) was taken from a square in Clifton, which caused the surveillance cameras to stop working. DG Safe City Project Asif Ijaz Sheikh explained that the cameras were taken off the poles and stored safely following the theft to avoid additional damage. He noted that the stolen distribution box contained equipment valued at millions of rupees, and the Safe City cameras were directly connected to it, leading to their shutdown. The DG further mentioned that the theft impacted not only the Safe City surveillance system but also made the e-challan cameras susceptible to issues. According to him, the district police had already been directed to ensure the protection of Safe City installations, and discussions had been held with zonal DIGs on this matter. He described the theft from the Safe City Project as a 'deeply worrying issue,' emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures around the city's surveillance infrastructure.
