On Thursday, President Museveni launched Uganda's initial shipment of chilli peppers cultivated in Busoga, intended for China, signifying a significant move in the sub-region's transition to high-value commercial farming.
The event was held at Busambo Village in Namasagali, Kamuli District, with the President, along with First Lady Janet Museveni, overseeing the departure of three containers containing 11 tonnes of dried chili.
Museveni praised chilli as a "golden crop" that can speed up Busoga's economic development.
"I commend the People's Republic of China for their enduring collaboration with Africa since 1949. As a team, we have launched the first container of Ugandan chili for export to China, marking another significant step in our journey toward prosperity," said the Ugandan leader.
Museveni praised farmers for heeding the government's encouragement to adopt commercial farming and highlighted the significance of export-oriented value chains in increasing family earnings.
First Vice Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga commended the President for backing the chili project but called on the government to meet outstanding obligations crucial for tapping into the area's agricultural capacity.
"The government is required to meet its promises to unleash Busoga's complete productive capacity, such as expanding electricity access and setting up an industrial zone for agro-processing," she stated.
China's envoy to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong, greeted the initial delivery under the 2024 Chilli Protocol, established during the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC), which enabled Ugandan chilli to access the Chinese spice market.
Zhang stated that China has now provided duty-free treatment to 98 percent of taxable Ugandan exports.
"Uganda now has complete access to the Chinese market for chili peppers. We urge farmers to boost production as there is significant demand," he added.
Luo Heng, the head of the China–Uganda Agricultural Industrial Park, commended Busoga farmers for providing over 90 percent of the chili in the first export shipment.
He detailed new financial commitments focused on enhancing agricultural processing and increasing Uganda's ability to export goods.
"We will set up a pineapple processing plant by Linyi Qiwei Canned Food Co. (De Shi Bo Ge) and invest Shs 544b ($150m) in the egg value chain through Little Giants Animal Husbandry," he disclosed.
Anthony Mula, the Director General of the Busoga Consortium for Development, stated that the chili project is anticipated to boost earnings, generate employment opportunities, and establish Busoga as a key player in Uganda's expanding agricultural export industry.
He mentioned that chilli has emerged as Busoga's latest cash crop, taking the place of sugarcane, which has faced fluctuating prices.
"Following the upcoming planting season in February, farmers in Busoga are preparing to increase output as chilli remains a reliable commercial crop," he stated.
The chili initiative focuses on 500 acres, anticipated to produce over 1,500 tonnes of dried chili each year, with an estimated export worth of $300 million (approximately Shs1.097 trillion). Chinese specialists predict that farmers could make more than Shs15 million per acre under a secured pricing model.
