Okra Solar has introduced Mesh-grid Beyond, a new set of hardware aimed at enabling Nigerian energy developers to implement rural electrification projects more quickly and with reduced expenses, in line with the Federal Government's ambitious initiative to expand access through renewable energy.
The breakthrough, based on Okra's current mesh-grid technology, aims to provide electricity to areas that mini-grid developers had previously considered difficult to reach, offering power in a financially viable way for both high and low energy consumption households, according to the company's statement released on Friday.
Launched in Lagos, Mesh-grid Beyond includes three main products, Sprout, Leaf, and OkraNet, designed to tackle the major issues in Nigeria's off-grid energy sector: being far from the power grid, restricted mobile network access, and the expensive process of connecting low-income families.
"Okra's latest products are revolutionary. Residents in Burum have greatly appreciated having them in their homes, and over the next year, we plan to utilize them to implement solutions more quickly, expanding our reach to more communities. I am confident that we can sustain profitability," said Daniel Komolafe, Chief Executive Officer of First Electric, one of Okra's regional partners.
At the core of the system, Sprout units act as energy centers for efficient users like small businesses, providing up to 2.4 kW of alternating current. These units come pre-set and pre-connected for quick on-site setup, saving significant installation time and improving safety through a secure, anti-theft housing for electrical parts.
Leaf devices, created for families with limited income, offer cost-effective electricity access for less than $100 per connection, marking a significant advancement for areas where 80 percent of users have historically been difficult to serve profitably. These units deliver 150 W of AC power, sufficient for essential home requirements like lighting and mobile device charging, while ensuring business sustainability.
In the meantime, OkraNet reduces reliance on mobile network coverage by enabling data to "jump" from one home to another until it reaches a central gateway, which can then connect through satellite or existing cellular service. This guarantees consistent billing, tracking, and upkeep even in regions without mobile signal.

Nigeria, which is home to the world's biggest off-grid community of approximately 90 million individuals, has a lot to gain from this kind of advancement. The DARES initiative, supported by the World Bank and the Federal Government, is promoting extensive rural electrification via renewable energy efforts.
Okra Solar states that the Mesh-grid Beyond suite meets DARES standards and is prepared for immediate use, providing developers with double the deployment speed compared to conventional mini-grids while reducing necessary grants by 50%. The company mentioned that this solution can support Nigeria’s Mission 300 initiative, aiming for universal electricity access by 2030, by ensuring sustainable energy delivery.
Nigerian Distributed Energy Service Companies can start implementing mesh grids with the Beyond suite right away. Okra Solar will offer practical support, including training, project planning, and technical help for extensive deployments.
