The Tanzanian government respondedby enforcing a nighttime ban and limiting online access, with authorities allegedly employing tear gas and real bullets to manage gatherings.
Amid the protests, an image began circulating on social media with claimsthat it depicted moments of turmoil in Dar es Salaam.

In one case, it iscaptioned, kwa Kiswahili: "Ni kama Tanzania alikutana mwanasiasa wa kuzunguka kutoka Kenya." Hii inajulikana kama: "Inawezekana Tanzania alikutana mwanasiasa wa kuzunguka kutoka Kenya."
The term returning officerrefers to the official responsible for supervising and declaring election outcomes. However, in this particular context, it has been adapted to depict a protester returning police tear gas canisters as a gesture of resistance during a demonstration.
The same image was also featuredIn a report published by the Star Kenya on 29 October, accompanied by the caption: "A demonstrator in the streets of Dar es Salaam kicks a tear gas canister on election day, October 29, 2025. /SCREENGRAB."
But did this image actually capture the events in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, following the election? We investigated.
Image captured in Kenya, not Tanzania
Africa Check conducted a reverse image search and located the photo in news articles from June 25, 2024.here and here.
According to these articles, we conducted an online search for the phrase: "A demonstrator kicks a tear gas canister during a nationwide strike opposing tax increases and the Finance Bill 2024 in downtown Nairobi, on June 25, 2024."
The findings brought us back to the original imageGetty Images, a stock image website. The photograph is credited toLuis Tato, a photographer with the news agency Agence France-Presse, and iscaptioned:

The image was captured in Kenya during the June 2024 demonstrations against the tax bill, not in 2025 during Tanzania's post-election events.
