Police Deny Raiding Kenyan Bishop's Home Post Sermon at Raila Odinga's Funeral

IN SHORT:A video showing bishop David Kodia discussing police officers said to have been sent by "Farouk" to search his house is circulating with claims that it occurred after his sermon at Raila Odinga's state funeral in October 2025. The video is genuine, but it dates back to 2023.

A video has gone viral across social media in Kenya showing David Kodia, bishop of Bondo's Anglican Church of Kenya, speaking to reporters.

Bondo is a local administrative area located within Siaya County in western Kenya.

In the clip, Kodia says armed police officers came to hishome stating that they had been dispatched by a person called "Farouk".

The video is being circulated with subtitles stating that the event occurred following Kodia's sermon atRaila Odinga'sfuneral taking place on 18 October 2025.

Odinga passed away while undergoing medical care in India on15 October. President William Ruto declaredseven days of nationwide mourning were declared, and it was announced that Odinga would receive a state funeral.

One widely viewed 18 October poston X reads: "BREAKING: Bishop David Kodia claims that Farouk dispatched police officers in uniform, equipped with firearms, to enter his residence following his speech at Nyayo Stadium."

Another postmatches his comments with an image ofFarouk Kibet, a political aidenear Ruto, with the caption: "Saddened as ACK Bishop David Kodia has stated that Farouk Kibet is targeting him. Ask for his protection."

The videos have been extensively shared and have accumulated more than 1.5 million views in total.

But did Kodia's residence actually get searched after his speech at Odinga's funeral? We investigated.

Kodia criticises corrupt leaders

Odinga and Ruto were the primary candidates in Kenya's 2022 presidential election, with Ruto being the one who won.narrowly won. In 2023, Odinga took the leadweeklyprotests against the government, primarily due to the highcost of living. However, over time, the relationship between the two leadersimproved, and in 2024, theysigned an agreementto create a "comprehensive government"

During his sermon at Odinga's state funeralat Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kodia strongly condemned corrupt leaders who exploited their positions for personal gain. He urged public officials to follow Odinga's example of integrity, promotion of human rights, and dedication to the people. His speech was met with enthusiastic applause and astanding ovation from the crowd.

Shortly thereafter, a viral video started spreading on the internet, implying that the government was responding to his intense statements.

But keyword searches for the event online indicate that the video isnot recent. It was recorded in April 2023, over two years prior to Odinga's passing.

At that time, Kodia was the head of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) in the Nyanza region. The police visit he mentionedtook placeAt his residence in the city of Kisumu during his absence. The officers reportedly interrogated his relatives andclaimedThey were looking into him for money laundering, a statement the bishop denied. The NCCKcondemned the raid.

The event occurred during the time when Odinga was directing anti-government demonstrations. A few days prior, Kodia had headed the NCCK insupportingOdinga's ability to lead mass demonstrations, noting that the protests highlighted legitimate issues regarding the rising cost of living and unjust government appointments. He had alsourgeddialogue between Ruto and Odinga

Therefore, although the event shown in the video occurred, it happened in 2023, not 2025. The posts being shared reuse an older clip to give the appearance of it being current.
