Saraki: PDP Convention a Waste of Effort, I Won't Participate

By Ayorinde Oluokun/Abuja
Many members of the party will view this as a major setback for the event, as former Senate President Bukola Saraki stated on Wednesday that he does not support the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP proceeding with its national convention set to take place this weekend in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Saraki made his decision considering contradictory court rulings that he pointed out have placed the legitimacy of the convention at risk, which he believes could also potentially affected the result of the event. He further mentioned that proceeding with the convention would also intensify the turmoil inside the party.
Saraki made this statement in a social media post following his meeting with some members of the PDP's Board of Trustees, BoT, leading the Ibadan PDP National Convention to announce that he is not allowed to participate.
"As a leader, bearing the political responsibility for the hopes and ambitions of my people, I cannot, with a clear conscience, support or be involved in any action that might endanger those aspirations," said Saraki, who is also the governor of Kwara State.
Regarding the future path of the PDP, Saraki mentioned that he informed the members of the PDP BoT he met with that the party needs to establish a Temporary Committee to manage its operations for the next two days.
He mentioned that this will facilitate genuine reconciliation and the Party's stability. He further noted that establishing a caretaker committee will build trust among members planning to run for elections under the PDP banner.
At this moment, no genuine politician with aspirations for election would attempt to run under the PDP's banner, uncertain if their nomination will be recognized or deemed invalid.
"It is evident that proceeding with the National Convention in Ibadan on 15-16 November 2025 will only intensify the current crisis. Hence, holding the Convention as planned is a futile endeavor. I do not endorse it. There is still time to seek a mutually beneficial resolution," said the former Senate President.
Remember that two courts in Abuja have issued rulings to halt the PDP National Convention, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, not to oversee the gathering.
Nevertheless, a high court in Ibadan issued a conflicting ruling, stating that the party should proceed with the national convention, and INEC was directed to oversee the proceedings.
Meanwhile, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, led by Umar Damagun, with the backing of governors elected under the party's banner led by Seyi Makinde from Oyo State, has stated that the Ibadan convention will proceed this weekend.
However, a group within the party that supports Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, has rejected the national convention. In fact, the initial court ruling that halted the convention was secured by this faction.
Members of the Wike-led group have expressed concerns that they were not kept informed or given the opportunity to take part in the activities that led up to the National Convention. The second ruling that stopped the convention was secured by the former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, who also stated that he was denied access to a form needed to run for the PDP chairmanship at the planned national convention.
Nevertheless, the court is anticipated to deliver its ultimate decision on the lawsuit initiated by Lamido today.

On 12 November 2025, I was honored to meet with members of the BOT Reconciliation Team from our esteemed party, the PDP, under the leadership of Wakili Adamawa, Amb. Hassan Adamu. They sought a discussion to gather my insights on potential strategies for bringing harmony back into the party. The meeting was insightful and significant, covering critical issues impacting our party.
We had thorough discussions regarding matters concerning the National Convention set to take place on 15-16 November 2025 in Ibadan.
In conclusion, I conveyed profound sorrow that, although some of us have made dedicated and challenging efforts, the Convention has been caught in significant controversy, both political and legal. This is not a positive sign for our party, nor for Nigeria's democracy as a whole.
I explicitly conveyed to the BOT team that political issues are rarely settled in court. Matters concerning political parties are most effectively addressed through mutual agreement with all parties involved sitting together. Legal disputes will only keep creating tension.
At present, there are contradictory court decisions regarding the validity of the scheduled convention. Consequently, there is no guarantee about whether the actions and results of the convention will be recognized.
As a leader, the political responsibility for the hopes and dreams of my people rests upon my shoulders, and I cannot, with a clear conscience, support or participate in any action that would endanger those aspirations.
My recommendation to the BOT team is that the only option available to us at this moment is for the party to establish a Caretaker Committee to manage the party's affairs temporarily. This needs to be accomplished within the next two days. This approach is the way toward genuine reconciliation and stability within the Party. It is also the most effective method to restore confidence among our members who plan to run for elections under the PDP banner. In the current situation, no committed politician with ambitions for electoral office would want to run under the PDP platform without knowing if their nomination will be valid or could be declared invalid.
It is evident that proceeding with the National Convention in Ibadan on 15-16 November 2025 will only intensify the current crisis. Hence, continuing with the Convention as planned is a futile endeavor. I do not endorse this course of action. It is still possible to seek a mutually beneficial resolution.
