Spotlight Unveils New HIV Dashboard
The Spotlight initiative has introduced a new HIV dashboard and graph tool, utilizing data from the Thembisa model. We aim for this dashboard to assist the general public and healthcare professionals in accessing key HIV statistics more conveniently.
There are numerous grounds for pessimism regarding healthcare in South Africa. Many provincial health departments face challenges in maintaining accurate financial records, long waiting lines and a lack of medical personnel are common at numerous clinics, corruption remains a widespread issue, and in at least one notable case, an individual was murdered for exposing questionable transactions.
However, there is also a lot to be proud of. Although there is widespread dysfunction in healthcare and governance, we have successfully put into place an extensive HIV treatment program. We have thousands of dedicated healthcare professionals. We are home to many of the world's top HIV and TB researchers. When short-sighted politics and the use of inadequately trained personnel do not interfere, many individuals in the healthcare sector have performed exceptionally well.
A hidden treasure in our fight against HIV is the exceptional research carried out at the University of Cape Town in modeling our HIV epidemic, and now also expanding to include our TB epidemic.
This kind of mathematical modeling is essential because, in addition to the available data not being flawless, it cannot and does not reveal the entire picture. For instance, official statistics regarding HIV testing can inform us about individuals who have tested positive for HIV, but they do not indicate how many people are living with the virus without having been tested. Instead of making assumptions, a reliable mathematical model combines various sources of information based on the data we do have, offering us a more accurate estimation.
At Spotlight, we typically rely on projections from the Thembisa model—the one created at UCT—when presenting HIV statistics in our reports. The Thembisa model serves as the foundation for UNAIDS's HIV estimates in South Africa. You can find a detailed explanation of how the model functions here. Although it is more intricate than this summary suggests, in essence, the model integrates data from multiple sources and applies advanced mathematical techniques to provide a thorough understanding of the HIV situation in South Africa.
This week, Spotlight introduced a new HIV dashboard and graph creator using data from the Thembisa model. We aim for the dashboard to assist the public and healthcare professionals in accessing key HIV statistics more conveniently. Please review it and share your feedback.
Although it is a Spotlight dashboard, we want to emphasize that the actual work was entirely carried out by the Thembisa team, and all the estimates are their own. In addition to creating this impressive set of outputs, they have been outstanding in making their methods and estimates openly accessible, allowing for the creation of this type of dashboard by others.
