Meta, Police launch ‘AMBER Alert’ to help trace missing children

Accra, July 17, GNA – Meta, the social technology company, in partnership with the Ghana Police Service, has launched an online platform to help trace missing children aged 17 and below.
The platform, dubbed “AMBER Alert Ghana,” is available on Facebook, Instagram, and now Messenger, the latest to support the programme.
AMBER Alert Ghana aims to help locate abducted children by sending real-time alerts to local communities through these three platforms.
The expansion to Messenger is expected to significantly widen the reach of these alerts and quickly get vital information to people who may be in the area where the child is missing.
Ghana becomes the 36th country globally and the fifth African country – after South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Morocco – to implement the programme.
Commissioner of Police (COP) Ms Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, said at the launch that the platform would dramatically increase the chances of locating the child quickly and safely.
“Starting today, when a child goes missing and is deemed to be in imminent danger, the Ghana Police Service can issue an AMBER Alert that will be instantly shared with people on Facebook and Instagram in the targeted area, dramatically increasing the chances of locating the child quickly and safely,” she said.
Since the introduction of the platform four years ago, 393 missing children had been reunited with their families in Ghana, COP Donkor noted.
She said integrating AMBER Alerts into Ghana’s security and investigative frameworks reflected the country’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and child protection.
“This technology will help us act faster, reach further, and resolve more cases, ensuring that every missing child has a better chance of being found,” she added.
Mr Kojo Boakye, Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Türkiye, said the likelihood of recovering a missing child increased when more people were aware and could assist.

“The expansion to Messenger reflects our deep commitment to child safety and building safer communities across Africa and beyond.”
“Every minute counts when a child is missing. By reaching people across Facebook, Instagram, and now Messenger, we are showing the power of technology, and Meta’s dedication to working with law enforcement agencies to help protect children.”
Chief Superintendent of Police Mrs Comfort Enyonam Antwi, Director of the Meta Police Unit (MPU), gave the criteria that must be met before an AMBER Alert is issued.
“These include confirming that an abduction has occurred, that the child is believed to be in imminent danger, and that there is enough descriptive information available,” she said.
“Once these criteria are satisfied, the Ghana Police Service notifies Meta’s Global Security Operations Centre, which operates 24/7.”
“Meta then distributes the alert to users in targeted areas via Facebook, Instagram Feeds, and Messenger notifications.”
AMBER Alerts are designed to boost the chances of finding missing children by enlisting the help of more people who can be on the lookout.
The alert includes key information such as a photo and description of the child, the location of the abduction, and any other relevant details that can assist in their immediate identification and safe return.
Users could share the alert instantly with friends or contact the police if they had helpful leads.
