Trump says Iran’s gift involves oil flow through Hormuz Strait
U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 24th that he had received a “very big present” from Iran. Speaking to reporters at the swearing-in ceremony of Markwayne Mullin, the new Secretary of Homeland Security, at the White House that afternoon, Trump said, “They gave us a present and the present arrived today,” adding, “It was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money. I’m sure details of that will eventually come out.” Trump, who withdrew his 48-hour ultimatum to Iran the previous day and delayed planned strikes on energy facilities inside Iran for five days, formally acknowledged the negotiations, claiming that an agreement had been reached on fifteen issues, including Iran’s abandonment of nuclear weapons and the recovery of enriched uranium.
Trump stated that day, “They agreed that there should be no more nuclear weapons in Iran and that they would not engage in uranium enrichment,” and, “We are in the best bargaining position.” He also mentioned that he, Vice President J D Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, eldest son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, among others, are involved in the negotiations. When asked what the “present” from Iran signifies, Trump responded, “It wasn’t nuclear related,” and, “It was oil and gas related. It was related to the flow and to the (Hormuz) Strait.” He also said that the United States had made clear to Iran that “number one, two, and three is they can’t have a nuclear weapon.” Earlier, CNN reported that the U.S. government had delivered a list of 15 demands to Iran through Pakistan, which had taken on the role of mediator.
Regarding the Iranian counterparts currently in negotiations, Trump said, “We have killed all their leadership,” and, “Now we have a new group in Iran, and we are dealing with a group of people who will soon be revealed.” He did not clarify whether these counterparts are the Iranian government or leadership, or some other force. “‘They are completely different individuals from the existing leadership who caused all sorts of problems,’ he said. ‘If we wanted to, we could easily eliminate them, but for now, we are watching how they come out.’” Trump, referring to the fact that several key figures constituting the leadership of the Iranian regime, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have been removed following U.S. military operations, also claimed, “We have actually replaced the regime,” and, “This is a change in regime.” He added that the war would end soon, stating, “We have won this war,” and, “Only the fake news (from the mainstream media) wants it to continue.”
Regarding The New York Times (NYT) report that Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, which has long been in conflict with Iran over the position of the leader in the Middle East, urged the continuation of operations along with the deployment of ground forces, Trump responded, “He is fighting alongside us as a warrior,” and, “Our cooperation with Saudi Arabia has been truly excellent.” When asked if he would urge Gulf region allies to participate more actively in the Iran operation, he said, “We want more participation from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).”
