Massimiliano Allegri has intensified training sessions for Samuel Chukwueze and the AC Milan squad, with the Nigeria winger left struggling to speak after gruelling double sessions at Milanello.
The former Juventus manager has got the Rossoneri squad doing double sessions most days as he looks to whip the team into shape ahead of the new season, with one training session in the morning and another in the evening.
Despite the sessions not being held in the midday sun, temperatures in Milan remain hot, and the effects are clearly being felt by the players. Rafael Leao and Chukwueze were left exhausted after yesterday’s session, with the Portuguese winger posting a video on his story showing their state.
In the video, Chukwueze attempted to speak about the day’s ordeal before conceding defeat.
“Today… God, I cannot talk,” he said.
The intensive training regime comes as Chukwueze faces an uncertain future at the San Siro, with the 26-year-old having been put on sale by the club as they source much-needed funds to facilitate a major squad rebuild.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chukwueze is one of the prominent names expected to depart Lombardy ahead of a major overhaul, with Milan willing to listen to offers for the winger.
The decision stems from Milan’s disappointing 2024/25 campaign, in which they finished eighth on the Serie A table and missed out on European football for next season.
Chukwueze has struggled to establish himself as a regular since arriving from Villarreal in the summer of 2023, featuring in just 26 league appearances last term, starting only nine times and contributing three goals plus two assists.
Spanish La Liga outfit Real Betis have been rumoured to be interested in his services, though there appears to be a disparity in valuation. Milan want to recoup closer to the €21.1m fee, plus a potential €7m in bonuses, they paid Villarreal for Chukwueze, whilst Betis’s current interest does not come close to matching that figure.
The intensive training regime represents a potential lifeline for Chukwueze, who has three options to revive his fledgling career. He could opt for a return to the Spanish top flight, assuming negotiations with Betis prove successful. A return to familiar surroundings could reignite the spark seen during his time at Villarreal, where he won the UEFA Europa League in 2021 against Manchester United.
Another option is to try out a new adventure in the Premier League. During the 2024/25 season, Chukwueze was linked with a winter transfer move to Fulham last January, though nothing materialised from those reports.
Lastly, Chukwueze could decide to remain with the Rossoneri if a summer move fails to materialise. Staying at the San Siro would mean having to fight for a starting shirt under Allegri, who is said in some circles not to fancy the Nigerian.
However, the gruelling training sessions suggest the former Juventus manager is determined to extract maximum effort from all players as he assesses his squad. For Chukwueze, the intensive pre-season could represent an opportunity to prove his worth and potentially change Allegri’s perception of him, though the physical demands are clearly taking their toll on the players.
