Amid heavy downpours and flash flooding across the Potohar region, rescue teams in Jhelum - including the police, Rescue 1122, and Pakistan Army personnel - carried out extensive relief operations on Thursday. More than 400 stranded individuals were rescued from various affected areas of District Jhelum as efforts continued late into the night.
State Minister for Finance and Railways, Bilal Azhar Kiyani, visited the flood-hit areas to supervise the rescue operations and lauded the immediate and coordinated response of the Jhelum police, district administration, and Pakistan Army in evacuating people from inundated zones. According to official figures, 428 individuals were rescued in total: 94 by Army ground teams, 160 through Army helicopter evacuations, and 174 by Rescue 1122.
Police teams, including officials from Chotala Police Station, played an active role in the operation under difficult conditions, especially in Rasoolnagar village, where water levels had become dangerously high. During the rescue mission, five stranded police personnel were brought to safety. However, one police constable, 27-year-old Haider Ali Hassan, a resident of Pind Dadan Khan, was reported missing.
According to District Police Officer (DPO) Jhelum, Tariq Aziz Sindhu, the constable was engaged in efforts to evacuate civilians when he was swept away by a strong current.
'The rescue operation was launched at 5 am on Wednesday under my personal supervision in the flooded areas of the district,' the DPO told The Nation. He added that Army helicopters were called in to airlift people from completely deluged areas, while search operations for the missing constable were ongoing using drones and aerial surveillance. 'The operation is still underway at night to ensure the safe evacuation of residents from vulnerable localities,' he said.
Deputy Commissioner Jhelum, Mesam Abbas, confirmed that high flood levels were observed in multiple areas including Bhimber, Dara Pur, Chakri, Chak Majo, Dhoke Bidar, Rajroor, Nakki, Mamyan, and Nakka Khlaspur.
Villages such as Sahoowal, Samanwaal, and Bara Phaphrah, along with others located near the Jhelum River and the under-construction Jalalpur Sharif Canal, were inundated, resulting in disrupted access to several communities.
Flash floods originating from the Salt Range also caused erosion of roads in Pind Dadan Khan, Lillah, and adjoining areas, affecting parts of the under-construction dual carriageway. The Jhelum River witnessed high flood levels, and the Mangla Reservoir approached its maximum storage capacity. Landslides in Choa Saidan Shah and Khewra further disrupted the road link between Pind Dadan Khan and Chakwal.
Meanwhile, in Chakwal district, areas around rain-fed nullahs and mini dams - including Dharrabi, Dhodha, and Khiewal - also faced significant flooding. A critical bridge connecting Chakwal to Sohawa and GT Road Jhelum was damaged, leading to the diversion of traffic through Mandra-Chakwal Road via Peer Phullahi. Additionally, parts of the Islamabad-Lahore Motorway near Chakwal experienced water pooling due to poor drainage, which temporarily disrupted traffic flow.
DPO Jhelum confirmed that police teams remain on ground in all affected areas, actively participating in ongoing rescue and evacuation operations alongside Rescue 1122 and Pakistan Army personnel.
