Airtel Africa and Nokia Unite to Launch Major Fiber Network
Airtel Africa, a top telecommunications and mobile money service provider operating in 14 African nations, has chosen Nokia to create a groundbreaking, high-capacity land-based fiber network covering East and Central Africa for its advanced fiber service, Airtel Africa Telesonic. This initiative is particularly important for landlocked countries such as Uganda.
The initiative is designed to link several African nations and connect undersea cables with land-based networks, greatly improving digital connectivity throughout the region. For Uganda, this land connection serves as the only high-speed route linking the country's digital economy to the global internet infrastructure. It will help stimulate economic development and enhance the standard of living for people across the continent by offering cost-effective and dependable digital services.
The project, launched at the current 28th AfricaCom event—the biggest assembly of connectivity leaders focused on Africa—will directly link the 2Africa undersea cable to Africa's land-based networks, serving as the essential digital lifeline for Uganda to obtain high-capacity international bandwidth, offering cost-effective and dependable connectivity. By utilizing Telesonic's fiber infrastructure and undersea cable systems, this initiative is anticipated to address the rising need for wholesale data across Africa, promoting economic growth and development.
With Nokia's 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform, this innovative technology will allow the network to handle up to 38 Terabits per second (Tbps) for rapid data transmission and is equipped with C+L Band capabilities to boost its capacity. It will be essential for high-speed connectivity and providing cloud-based services. Driven by Nokia's advanced high-speed coherent Photonic Service Engine (PSE) technology, the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) network, made up of 139 nodes, is implemented across several countries.
Beyond developing Africa's digital infrastructure, this initiative highlights Telesonic's dedication to supporting businesses, education, and healthcare across the continent.
Razvan Ungureanu, the Chief Technology Officer of Airtel Africa, stated: Implementing Nokia's 1830 Photonic Service Switch platform marks a crucial enhancement to our network infrastructure across Africa. This will allow us to offer increased capacity and fast connectivity to effectively manage large-scale traffic. With Nokia's Photonic Service Engine supporting our DWDM network in several countries, we are paving the way for significant growth and fresh opportunities across the continent.
PD Sarma, the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa Telesonic, stated: "Our partnership with Nokia marks a major achievement in enhancing Africa's digital infrastructure.
