Members of the Afiesere community in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, have issued a contractor involved in an unfinished electricity project with a two-week deadline to return to the site and finish the work.

They warned of a confrontation if the contractor did not adhere to the deadline.

The upset community members gathered in large numbers on Wednesday, expressing their sorrow over what they called the ongoing power cuts endured by residents as a result of the electricity project being left unfinished.

PUNCH MetroIt was learned that the electricity substation project, intended to enhance power supply for the community and surrounding areas, was awarded a few years back by the Transmission Company of Nigeria/Federal Government to the contracting company, which has since left the site untouched.

Concerned about the negative situation, demonstrators from the Afiesere community and surrounding areas took to the streets on Wednesday, appealing to the TCN and the Federal Government to "ask the contractor to return to the site and finish the project."

The demonstrators expressed their frustration, stating that "Afiesere community has been facing power cuts for years due to the contractor's inability to finish the project."

They argued that "the contractor has demonstrated absolutely no commitment to finishing the project."

On behalf of the demonstrators, the President General of Afiesere Community, Mr. Luke Umukoro, stated, “The non-violent demonstration was initiated to bring the government's focus to the abandoned project carried out by the contractor (AAKs and Bros Nig. Ltd)."

He requested the government to "instruct the contractor to proceed immediately, as the equipment required for the project has already been provided, but the contractor has not fulfilled the work as agreed."

"The casual approach of the contractor can no longer be tolerated, so we are initiating this peaceful demonstration with a 21-day notice to return to the site, or the Federal Government will reassign the contract," Umukoro said.

He expressed dissatisfaction that a substation initiative, which was intended to provide electricity not only to the Afiesere community but also to nearby areas, had been left unfinished by the contractor.

He also voiced worry that "a petroleum-producing area with a flow station, a compression facility, a fuel station, a gathering system, and more than 40 oil wells should not be permitted to keep experiencing power cuts."

The Community Youth Chairman, Mr. Ejotubu Erubure, Madam Josephine Ughellidoro, and Mr. Joseph Ugbe expressed similar sentiments.

"For years, we have been facing this power problem. A community that produces oil can regain its former success. We are pleading with the Federal Government via the Ministry of Power and Energy to bring back our electricity," they stated in a shared declaration.

Upon being reached, the Assistant General Manager, TCN, Ughelli, Chukwuemeka Kenneth, who granted the contract to the company (AAKS and Bros Nig. Ltd), stated that "TCN does not owe the contractor."

Kenneth informed reporters that "TCN is unaware of the reasons behind the project's prolonged execution."

He stated, "What remains to be obtained are cables for connecting the equipment to the control room, and we do not owe the contractor. I am unsure why the project is taking so long. I had anticipated that the project should have been finished well before this."

Nevertheless, the Project Manager, AAKS and Bros Nig. Ltd, Mr. Timothy Ogbebor, upon being reached, pledged to the community that illumination would be provided "before December 25, 2025."

He stated, "Once the cables are removed from the ports and transported to the location, the project will be finished in no more than a month."
