Group Pushes for Formation of Aba State in Southeast
After the National Assembly approved the establishment of a sixth state in the Southeast, the Aba State Movement has rekindled its demand for the acknowledgment of Aba State as the new state in the region.
Speaking to journalists in Aba on Wednesday, representing the group led by its chairman, Eze Love Nwogu, spokesperson Chief Theo Nkire stated, “Our stance — the stance of Aba State — is that the sixth state, which the National Assembly aims to establish in the South-East region, is Aba State. Aba State is the pride of Eastern Nigeria, as the sixth state for the South-East region.”
Nkire remembered that two weeks prior, the Joint Committee of the National Assembly, which includes the Senate and the House of Representatives, convened in Lagos and proposed the establishment of a sixth state from the five current South-East states — Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo — to increase their total to six.
He pointed out that the situation regarding Aba State was "different, distinct, and unique," clarifying that the suggested state includes nine local government areas — Aba North, Aba South, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Obingwa, Osisioma Ngwa, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, and Ukwa West.
Nkire stated, "Several of the states currently in the country had only three or four local governments at their establishment — such as Kebbi, Bayelsa, and Ebonyi."
Aba is the earliest state demand in the country. Our community first requested states in 1952 and submitted a proposal to the Willink Commission in 1957. That was more than 70 years ago.
Aba has met all the constitutional conditions outlined in Section 8 of the Nigerian Constitution.
He also remembered that Aba State received approval for a referendum from both branches of the National Assembly in June 1983, pointing out that nearly all the states approved for referendum during that period have now been established.
"So why not Aba State? Aba State was among the four states suggested for the South-East by the National CONFAB in 2014 during the Goodluck Jonathan administration," he stated.
As per Nkire, the 2014 National Conference proposed the establishment of 19 new states throughout the nation, potentially raising the total number of states from 36 to 55.
He also mentioned that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading Igbo cultural organization, had previously supported Aba as the sixth state in the South-East — initially in 2015 by a committee headed by Chief Emmanuel Iwanyanwu, and once more in 2018 by another committee led by Professor Chigozie.
Nkire emphasized that Aba is economically feasible, highlighting its robust performance in trade, manufacturing, farming, petroleum, natural gas, solid minerals, power supply, and workforce.
"Aba is referred to as the Japan of Africa due to its native technology. When discussing palm oil, Eastern Nigeria relied on it, and the region known as the new Aba State was the palm oil hub of Eastern Nigeria," he stated.
He mentioned that the residents of the proposed Aba State region—specifically the Ukwa and Ngwa groups—have maintained a unified effort to establish the state for more than 70 years, without any alterations to borders or disagreements from any village.
"The region seeking Aba State has remained undivided. The community has been united in their pursuit for more than 70 years. Not a single village has chosen to leave, and there is a deep cultural connection between the Ukwa and Ngwa people," he stated.
The group therefore called on the National Assembly to recognize Aba as the sixth state in the South-East region.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo committees selected Aba as the suggested sixth state for the South-East region a decade ago and confirmed this decision in 2018. Nkire stated, "We are requesting the National Assembly to recognize Aba State as the sixth state in the South-East, as none of the other proposals has the distinctive and unique characteristics of the proposed Aba State."
