FRC Leader Concludes UNCTAD-ISAR Chairmanship

The head of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Dr Rabiu Olowo, officially ended his role as Chair of the 41st Session of the United Nations Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Standards of Accounting and Reporting at the United Nations Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by the FRC, the end of his term was highlighted by the holding of elections and the official transfer of the ISAR chairmanship.
The PUNCH states that Olowo was chosen as Chair for the 41st session of the UNCTAD-ISAR in November 2024.
Considering his time during the opening of the 42nd session in Geneva, Olowo mentioned it was an honor to be part of the team. "During the last year, our joint work was focused on two main goals: promoting the alignment and real-world application of sustainability reporting, verification, and ethical guidelines; and aiding the merging of financial and sustainability reporting via digital advancements."
These goals highlight our joint dedication to boosting market confidence, improving responsibility, and promoting long-term development. The last year has shown what can be achieved when nations, organizations, and specialists collaborate with a common sense of direction.
Highlighting his major accomplishments, he mentioned that they involved: "Promoting the alignment of sustainability reporting frameworks, ISAR-41 greatly enhanced the worldwide conversation about compatibility among sustainability reporting frameworks, such as the ISSB Standards and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards. Enhanced cooperation with the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants also bolstered the ethical principles that support reliable sustainability assurance."
These combined efforts decreased fragmentation and increased uniformity in global reporting methods. Enhancing Assurance and Ethical Standards: Regional and international consultative discussions, such as the Africa Regional Partnership–IESBA dialogue held in May 2025 and the IPSASB meeting on climate-related disclosures, contributed to the creation of reliable, independent sustainability assurance practices. These actions boosted user trust and encouraged honesty in sustainability data.
He mentioned that ISAR-41 considered digitalization as a key factor in integrated reporting.
Regarding the growth and formalization of regional collaborations, Olowo mentioned, “In 2025, ISAR’s Regional Partnerships evolved into structured platforms that facilitate peer learning, exchange of knowledge, and ongoing capacity development across different regions. In Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eurasia, and the Gulf, nations made progress in applying sustainability and corporate reporting practices through technical workshops, training programs, and endeavors to meet global standards.”
I would like to recognize the professionalism and strategic guidance provided by the ISAR Secretariat. Their thorough analysis, organization, and technical skills keep ISAR a trustworthy, esteemed, and internationally significant platform.
The head of the FRC mentioned that his accomplishments during his tenure were achieved due to collaboration, common goals, and united determination.
"I appreciate the confidence entrusted in me to act as Chair, and I am still assured that the efforts carried out here will keep influencing a more open, responsible, and enduring global economy. As we start this session, let us proceed with clear vision, solidarity, and dedication, understanding that the choices we make here support the integrity of global financial systems and the prosperity of communities worldwide," he stated.
