Head of Migration Listens to Gruesome Tales of Exodus From El Fasher
Approximately 90,000 individuals have been forced to leave their homes after the capture of El Fasher in North Darfur, Sudan, while an additional 50,000 have escaped conflict in the Kordofan region, as reported by the UN's migration official.
"As individuals exit the region, they are describing extensive violence, sexual assault, and civilians who are occasionally shot without warning," stated the Director General of the UN migration agency.IOM), Amy Pope, during a meeting on Wednesday.
Hiding from drones
"Numerous individuals reported departing the region and encountering corpses along their path. She mentioned she encountered women and children who had been walking for days in certain cases, 'hiding from drones, carrying just their children.'
The remarks occur as violence escalates and spreads across Sudan, following the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) taking control of the regional capital El Fasher last month from government forces, after over 500 days of blockade.
Ms. Pope mentioned that the level of demand is "occurring at a moment when there have been historic reductions in humanitarian aid globally."
Fewer than 5,000 medical kits in stock
The IOM is offering shelter, essential dignity kits, and cooking supplies to those in greatest need, although Ms. Pope cautioned that the current funding for this assistance is significantly insufficient, standing at just eight percent.
Less than 5,000 kits were present in a warehouse located in Port Sudan, with 35 IOM tents currently being distributed.
Some nations and collaborators have requested further details or are looking for data regarding the financial status, but the magnitude of the requirement is so significant that the agency is"trying to keep up"Currently," Ms. Pope stated.
Joint humanitarian efforts
IOM is coordinating with the UN relief coordination office (OCHA) and the World Food Programme (WFP) to secure resources.
By exploring different regions of the nation,we can offer a detailed overview to the global community regarding the necessary actions to assist particularly vulnerable civilians who are fleeing violence."
The United Nations relief official Tom Fletcher has been in Sudan this week and is set to update reporters from the region on Monday.
Ms. Pope mentioned that although IOM has vehicles entering Tawila, a city approximately 60 kilometers from El Fasher, access is very restricted, and the agency is primarily assisting those who are departing.
Several humanitarian workers have also fallen victim to violence in recent months, with some sustaining injuries or losing their lives, Ms. Pope noted.
Preparations for 'intensified hostilities'
UN human rights chiefVolker Türk cautioned on Wednesday that there has been no decrease in the deaths of civilians.
Speaking to the French Senate, he mentioned that his office (OHCHR) keeps getting troubling reports stating that the RSF is "committing horrific crimes, such as immediate executions, sexual abuse, and other breaches."
He mentioned that in the Kordofan region, there were "obvious signs of rising conflicts as murders and damage escalate."
Mr. Turk called on nations to uphold theSecurity CouncilThe arms embargo in Darfur, emphasizing that safeguarding civilians, ensuring humanitarian access, and restoring civilian governance are the main concerns.
