Plans for the 59th Anniversary of the Coronation of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) and the inaugural Omusinga's Birthday Run, set for Friday, November 14, 2025, are intensifying in Kasese District.

The celebration of the coronation, originally scheduled for October 19, was delayed following Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere's evacuation overseas for medical care just days prior to the ceremony.
After the coordinated attacks on November 1, 2025, in the areas of Kasese, Fort Portal, and Bundibugyo carried out by individuals believed to be using machetes, resulting in over 40 suspects killed and more than 90 people detained, IGP Abbas Byakagaba traveled to Kasese District on Wednesday to evaluate the security conditions before the coronation.
While visiting, the IGP conducted a private meeting with police personnel from the four police divisions in the Rwenzori East Region (Kasese) along with cabinet members of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu at Virina Gardens in Kasese Municipality.
Speaking to reporters following the meeting, IGP Byakagaba emphasized the police's dedication to maintaining peace and security during the festivities.
We will make sure that people celebrate peacefully on Friday, November 14, as OBR marks its 59th Coronation Anniversary and organizes the first-ever Omusinga's Birthday Run. The Kingdom has been vital in fostering stability, not just in Kasese District but throughout the whole region.
He also praised the robust cooperation between the Kingdom and security organizations.
The bond between the Kingdom and the police is strong, and we have collaborated closely throughout the years. Our dedication to ensuring peace will not conclude with these festivities but will extend through the Christmas period and also during the upcoming elections.
Speaking about the recent assaults, the IGP strongly criticized the violence, stating that those arrested in relation to the events will soon appear before the judicial system.
It is crucial that no one is deceived or encouraged to participate in illegal actions. Individuals involved in these activities are being separated and handled in accordance with the law. Let us all serve as representatives of peace and harmony. We must also remain productive, as laziness can provide a breeding ground for these harmful ideas.
In reply, Obusinga Prime Minister Mr Benson Kule Baritazale thanked the IGP for his visit and message, highlighting that it restored the Kingdom's confidence in the government's dedication to regional security.
"The IGP's assurance has boosted our confidence in maintaining peace and security in the area and the nation as a whole, particularly with the coronation festivities approaching," he stated.
He conveyed confidence in the ongoing partnership between the Kingdom and the security organizations, highlighting that during the discussion, they revealed the five core principles of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR), as well as important details from the Kingdom's five-year strategic framework.
Baritazale stated that the Kingdom is requesting Shs 1.3 billion to support the execution of the first projects.
"Among the initiatives we aim to launch is the creation of a radio station, Nzururu FM, to facilitate the rapid and efficient spread of OBR programs. We also intend to develop a One-Stop Cultural Village, a location where visitors can come to learn and explore—particularly to inform the younger generation," he stated.
In the meantime, several events were held for this year's 59th Coronation Anniversary and the Omusinga's Birthday Run, such as community clean-up activities, tree-planting initiatives, and more.
Mr. Jackson Mumbere, the Programs Director at People and Nature Rwenzori Mountains, mentioned that the tree-planting activity took place at Buhikira Royal Hill in Kasese Town, noting that the initiative seeks to plant more than 800 native trees, following the planting of 100,000 trees between July 5, 2019, and October 16, 2025.
He also mentioned that the organization has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with OBR to enhance cooperation in environmental restoration initiatives.
We have collaborated with OBR and entered into an MoU with them. We encourage all citizens of the Kingdom to adopt tree planting throughout Kasese District as a method of rejuvenating depleted soils.
