The High Commissioner of Kenya in Uganda, Joash Maangi, has cautioned Kenyans from getting involved in Uganda's political matters, emphasizing that such actions could lead to significant repercussions for their security and diplomatic ties.
His comments follow the recent release of two Kenyan citizens, Mr. Bob Njagi and Mr. Nicholas Oyoo, who had been missing for over a month. They were allegedly taken against their will during the manifesto launch of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu in Kaliro, eastern Uganda.
The United Nations High Commissioner highlighted that Kenya would not let the incident impact the friendly diplomatic ties between the two nations.
"We call on our brothers and sisters in Kenya to focus on domestic politics. Let Ugandans handle their own political matters. Each nation has its sovereignty, which should be honored according to its constitution," he stated.
The vanishing of the individuals led to significant condemnation of the Ugandan administration. Kampala initially refuted any involvement in detaining the two at a facility.
In a conversation with theDaily Monitor, Mr Maangi stated that Kenyan officials in Kampala only became aware of the kidnapping two days following the incident. The families of Mr Njagi and Mr Oyoo notified Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs about their disappearance, which then alerted the Kenyan High Commission in Uganda.
"We were informed that two Kenyans went missing approximately a month ago. According to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, we inquired with the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding their location, and they pledged to look into it and provide an answer," stated Mr. Maangi. "When the progress appeared to be slow, we reached out again. Fortunately, on Friday, we were told that we could retrieve them," he added.
The High Commissioner, nevertheless, refused to reveal where he encountered the two Kenyans or who specifically alerted the Kenyan delegation to their release. They were subsequently taken by Ugandan officials to Busia border town, where they were welcomed by Busia County Commissioner Chaunga Mwachaunga.
Eyewitnesses stated that the two Kenyans were taken by masked individuals in uniforms near Kireka, Kampala, just after they participated in the NUP campaign event on October 1. President Museveni later verified that government officials had held them in "a fridge." He asserted that the Kenyans were in Uganda to educate opposition members on methods for causing unrest.
In contrast, Mr Maangi stated that Mr Njagi and Mr Oyoo were in Uganda for proper tourism-related activities. "One of them was carrying out a site inspection to find spots for a group of 15 Canadian tourists interested in gorilla trekking in western Uganda," he added.
Uganda's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem Okello, commended High Commissioner Maangi for establishing a firm boundary and urging Kenyan citizens not to interfere in Uganda's internal affairs.
