PDP Convention Can Proceed, Says BOT

Opposing the attempt to delay the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention set for Saturday and Sunday, the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) has stated that the convention is entirely feasible to proceed.
The BoT stated that the party is depending on the Supreme Court ruling, which highlighted the handling of the party's internal matters.
When asked if the party convention will proceed as planned, responding to reporters on Thursday in Abuja, the BoT Chairman, Sen. Adolphus Wabara stated, "It is definitely feasible, or practicable if you prefer that term, for us to attend the convention. All the party's structures had previously agreed that we would go to the convention. As you know, the Governors’ Forum, the NWC, and the Board of Trustees, during our last meeting, mentioned in our communique that we would proceed to the convention."
But if, for some reason, the Court of Law makes a different decision, as we are depending on the Supreme Court's judgment, which should have directed lower courts to make a decision. I mean, in a civilized society, these matters are closely linked and interconnected.
You don't create various issues and different orders when the Supreme Court has already considered them. So you're essentially questioning the Supreme Court of the country, but in Nigeria, anything is possible. However, regarding the party's organs, the convention will proceed.
Nevertheless, he mentioned that the party would follow any legal court directive, emphasizing that "if we are halted by the courts, we are a lawful party. We will comply with the law, or adhere to the final order, depending on the situation."

"There is truly no crisis. All the issues we face within the PDP are of our own making. In politics, it's a matter of interests. Some individuals desire the party's demise now and plan to bring it back in 2031 for their personal benefit," he stated.

Additionally, earlier speaking, the Chairman of the Reconciliation Committee, Ambassador Hassan Adamu, mentioned that the committee was established on November 5 and promptly began discussions with important stakeholders to guarantee a smooth convention.
"We have engaged with different parts of our party—the leaders, the Governors’ Forum, and other groups—and we have now developed our suggestions for a smooth convention. It has been a challenging task, but we have made every effort to share our conclusions," Adamu stated.
Delivering the committee's findings, Mike Oghiadomhe, the Committee Secretary and former Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan, mentioned that the group had in-depth discussions with key stakeholders, such as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, members of the Governors’ Forum, the National Working Committee (NWC), and suspended national officials.
Oghiadomhe said they met with the Minister of the FCT, the Governors' Forum, and the NWC, which was headed by the Deputy National Chairman in the absence of Ambassador Damagum. They also met with the suspended National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, the Organizing Secretary, and the National Legal Adviser.
He mentioned that the committee also sought input from former Senate President Bukola Saraki and other party officials prior to finalizing its findings and suggestions.
"We are convinced that we have addressed all the challenges currently affecting our party. Our suggestion offers a guide for sustainable and forward-thinking party management at this stage," he concluded.
The reconciliation committee delivered six versions of its report, along with appendices that include documents gathered throughout its discussions.
Upon submitting the report, the BoT is anticipated to review the results and suggestions in readiness for the PDP's highly awaited national convention.
In the meantime, Dr. Gbenga Hashim, a leader of the PDP and former presidential hopeful, stated that the planned convention will not take place this weekend, suggesting that a temporary committee might oversee the party instead.
In Abuja, on Thursday, Hashim, who is running for president in 2027, stated that hosting the convention would have extremely harmful consequences for the party.
He revealed that steps are being taken to facilitate reconciliation between the conflicting groups.
He stated: "There will be no gathering this weekend as there is a requirement to bring the parties together."
Then I inquired and spoke with some of the groups, stating that we don't require factions. If you have such a convention, it could result in the party becoming divided. Therefore, measures have been implemented to ensure we can hold a single, unified convention.
And likely you will have a supervisory committee. Individuals are debating this proposal, and we have been involved in it for a few days.
The PDP needs to be singular. It can't be an arbitrary PDP. And now we have our PDP. We need to have one PDP.
There will be individuals who advocate for a caretaker committee. This was my initial concept. I am not aligned with anyone. It was my idea that I presented to many people.
The fact that I didn't come out to make a statement doesn't imply that... I made a statement when this crisis emerged. I was planning to start high-level discussions. I talked to several governors. I spoke with important stakeholders. I also had a conversation with Chairman Damagum. I spoke with Abdurahman Muhammad, the leader of the other group involved. I had discussions with many stakeholders. I talked to many people. And thanks to God, some sense is being maintained. I believe that everyone will eventually come together.
