PTI raises alarm over 'inhumane' treatment of Khan, Bushra in unlawful detention

The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday expressed concerns over alleged inhumane and unlawful treatment being meted out to jailed leader Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other party leaders during their detention on 'fabricated and politically motivated charges.' Speaking at a press conference, PTI Central Information Secretary (CIS) Sheikh Waqas Akram lambasted the present regime for depriving the incarcerated PTI founder Khan of all fundamental and basic rights.
He strongly condemned the alleged inhumane treatment of political detainees, the erosion of judicial credibility, and the alarming economic mismanagement under the current government, warning that these failures were driving the nation toward a full-blown constitutional and humanitarian crisis. Waqas stated that despite being a former prime minister, Khan was denied both his rightful status and even the basic rights of an ordinary prisoner, which was matter of grave concern, as he is the country's most popular leader, and the entire nation is deeply worried about his wellbeing and safety.
He claimed that PTI founder has been unjustly denied access to newspapers, television and books, and that all meetings with friends and political associates have been arbitrarily suspended. PTI CIS further stated that even his legal counsel has been barred from consulting him on over 200 politically motivated and baseless cases-an outright violation of his right to a fair legal defense.
The PTI secretary information lamented that despite a court-mandated procedure permitting meetings with six designated individuals, jail authorities have repeatedly violated these orders, demonstrating blatant contempt of court. He stated that even Bushra Bibi has been denied the right to meet her family, while Aleema Khan is not being allowed to visit her brother and other sisters are granted visits only occasionally. He questioned why there was such fear of PTI chief, adding that if he truly threatened the status quo, then it must be recognized that he is the country's most prominent political leader. PTI CIS stated that the persecution of Pakistan's most popular leader was not only a grave injustice but also a direct assault on democratic principles.
He highlighted the worsening health of senior PTI leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, calling it a matter of urgent humanitarian concern. Referring to Dr. Yasmin Rashid, he said, 'Even if she defeated Nawaz Sharif politically, her basic human rights cannot be ignored.' Waqas also criticized the judiciary's inconsistency, noting that despite being granted bail by the Supreme Court, Senator Ejaz Chaudhry remained imprisoned in the same case. 'I appeal to Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi that your directives are being openly discarded by Adiala Jail administration. The integrity of the judiciary is being mocked and undermined,' he said. Waqas urged the chief justice to take immediate and decisive action to restore the dignity and authority of the judiciary, and to put an end to the inhumane treatment being inflicted upon PTI founder, as well as the party's leadership and workers forthwith.
He affirmed that PTI's leadership and workers remained steadfast and would continue their peaceful legal and political struggle for the supremacy of the Constitution, rule of law, judicial independence, and Haqeeqi Azadi. Waqas expressed his deep anguish over the judiciary's steady loss of credibility, warning that the consequences of this institutional decline were now being felt globally, severely damaging Pakistan's image in the international community.
Commenting on PTI MNA Jamshed Dasti's disqualification, the information secretary stated that no one in Pakistan's legal history has ever been disqualified under Article 62(1)(d), yet now elected representatives are being arbitrarily removed. 'What message are we sending to the millions who voted for them?' he asked. He reaffirmed that PTI's entire legal team stood firmly with Dasti and all those unjustly targeted for political reasons.
He said that now, even the parties that formed this coalition government were turning on each other, as the entire structure was falling apart.
